Tibet Monastery Tour

This 8 night’s 9 days Tibet Monastery Tour in Tibet (3 nights in Kathmandu) takes you around Lhasa and the surrounding settlements. The capital of Tibet Lhasa derives its name from two words LHA and SA, where Lha means god and SA means Land in Tibetan. Lhasa as it name signifies is an open museum to study Tibetan Buddhism as there are lots of monasteries, Gompas, Palaces and ancient statues and paintings from ancient time till 18th century and they are still very lively. This 8 night’s Tibet tour provides an insight into the religious aspect of life in Lhasa and provides the opportunity to interact with the Tibetans. In this Tibet Monastery Tour we will make Lhasa out hub and drive to different directions visit monasteries and other heritages every day.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at the Tribhawn International airport, Kathmandu our representative from Alfresco Adventure Travel wait for you outside at Arrival gate with your Name card. Our team will welcome and collect your baggage at the airport. By formal introduction with the representative and transferred to your hotel. In the evening you will enjoy complimentary welcome dinner in a typical Nepali restaurant with Nepalese cuisine. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2

Sightseeing at Kathmandu and pre tour preparation.

After breakfast, the company owner will meet you on the hotel and discuss about all programs and coordinate any last-minute arrangements. After the staff meeting, one of our professional tour guides will take you on a sightseeing trip and then back to the hotel. Rest of the day can be used for traveling around Thamel and buying any last minute other necessities items.

Day 3

Fly from Kathmandu to Gongar Airport

After a 2 and half hours flight we will arrive in Gongar Airport and half an hour drive from there we will reach Lhasa

Day 4

Sightseeing of Lhasa including Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street

After breakfast we will visit the Potala palace, the Palace of the Dalai Lama. This architectural masterpiece is the symbol of unity of the Tibetans. This palace was built by King Soongtsan Gampo, who was married to Princess Wen Cheng Tang in 641 A.D. It has got 999 houses built on Hongshan Hill with a red building on top. It is one of the grandest Palaces in the world till date. After lunch we will drive towards the Jokhang Temple, the most scared temple for Tibetan Buddhists. After spending some time at the Jokhang temple we will walk through the Barkhor Street, a traditional old street in Lhasa.

Day 5

Full day Sightseeing of Lhasa covering Norbulingka, Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

We will start the sightseeing today from Norbulingka - the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, located along the Kyichu River and two kilometers west of the Potala Palace. This Palace has a huge garden covering 360,000 square meters, making it the biggest manmade garden in Tibet. It has got 374 rooms. The second site is Drepung Monastery, made by Chojey Tashi Palden in the 14th Century. It had four departments, of which Loseling, or "The Hermitage of the Radiant Mind," was the largest, housing more than three quarters of Drepung's ten to fifteen thousand monks. Now it is one of Tibet’s premier monastic educational institutions The last site for today is Sera Monastery, built in 1419; this grand Monastery was home to more than 5,000 monks and five monastic colleges. Although much less active now, with only several hundred monks currently in residence, one of the most interesting times to visit the monastery is in the afternoon when monks, after finishing their morning scripture classes, can be seen debating in the courtyard.

Day 6

Drive to Tsurphu Monastery and Yangbachen hot spring.

After breakfast we will take a drive of one hour/70km west to reach the Tsurphu Monastery which resides in a valley floor. This famous monastery of Tibet is seat of Karmapa branch of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism. If you feel acclimatized you can do the Tsurphu Kora which provides excellent view of Tsurphu below. We will drive to Yangbachen hot spring before we return back to Lhasa for overnight.

Day 7

Drive to Ganden monastery and Tridum nunnery

After breakfast we will start the drive to Ganden Monastery which is 120Km away from Lhasa and takes around one and half hours of drive. After Ganden Monastery we will visit Tridum Nunnery, located in a narrow gorge at the confluence of two streams. You can have the famous medicinal hot-springs there. We will experience the accommodation of guesthouse of Nunnery Guesthouse (Dormitory).

Day 8

Drive to Drigun Til Monastery and then to Lhasa.

We will start early in the morning today to visit Drigung Til, head monastery of the Drigungpa school of the Kagyupa order, where 280 monks are living and practicing Buddhism. Up to the hill of Drigung Til, there is one the holiest sky-burial site in Lhasa region, if you want to see the sky-burial; you need to ask for the permission from the family of the deceased and the senior lama who conducts the ceremony. Drive to Lhasa for overnight.

Day 9

Visit Samey Monastery, Yumbu Lhakhang and Tsonge Tomb.

A short drive from Lhasa takes us to Tsedang where we can visit the Samey Monastery, Yumbulhakhang palace and Tsongey Tomb. Overnight stay at Lhasa.

Day 10

Excursion to Yamdrok Tso.

A short drive from Lhasa will take us to Tsedang and from there we will start the excursion to Yamdrok Tso. After the excursion we will drive back to Lhasa.

Day 11

Fly from Gongar Airport to Kathmandu.

After a two and half hours flight we will arrive in Kathmandu Airport and Transfer to hotel.

Day 12

Transfer to international airport for your onward journey

Today is your last day with us in Nepal. You will escort to the airport for your onward destination with the unforgettable moment of your life from the Tibet Monastery Tour. Our office representative came at your hotel for pick up and drop you at the airport.
